The original demon story that is the origin of Devilman and, to a lesser extent, Mazinger Z. This is a personal favorite of mine. In fact, I prefer it over all other animated demon works with the exception of all Enma. One of the nice things is that it follows the original manga closely and gives to the original story a proper ending. I conceptually like it more than Devilman because the enemy here is not Satan but God itself. I particularly like how Medusa is portrayed and the sacrifices she has to make, even giving her life to restore Satan. And I also like how all of Dante's struggle was all part of the plan of God since the beginning. Like Devilman, the story ends with the total destruction of humanity and demons, but with a clear cut new beginning, fulfilling the Adam and Eve prophecy with a future that is neither divine nor demonic, but something entirely different and stronger than God.

Anyway, this is a particularly well distributed TV series, so it is not difficult to watch. But many might have only seen the censored version thanks to the first foreign distributor from which most other distributors purchased the series. I recommend watching the uncensored version. The Italian, Spanish and Portuguese dubs are good in my opinion, but avoid the English dub, which is by far the weakest.

Do you know where I can get the uncensored and uncut version? I heard someone say it's not as good as the incomplete manga and the show generally got bad reviews all over the net, so I have avoided it till now. (Only watched the first episode back then)

Most criticism comes from English websites and from anime fans who do not know much of the early works of Go Nagai. It is a fair point actually, because, for a 2002 anime, it doesn't fit well with how modern series are depicted since the story was written in another time, so even Ryo's attitude, the same as in the original manga, contrasts too much with how modern lead characters are depicted. If you know the original manga and the story behind it, you will appreciate the anime.

Also, you will find a different appreciation in Italian, Portuguese and French websites. sebrider from the Go Nagai, Go! French forum gives a very accurate description of the particularities of the series.

Regarding an uncensored version, try ed2k. Also, Nadja Applefield Fansub Portuguese version uses the uncensored raws.
